Nomsa teaching

The schools listed below are places where Nomsa Burkhardt held full-year or part-year residencies, often culminating in assemblies or end-of-session performances with parent attendance. In these residencies, Nomsa brings together her background as a South African-born performing artist and her long experience as a teaching artist to create programs that are engaging, welcoming, and meaningful for every age group.

Nomsa does not deliver a "one-size-fits-all" workshop. She adapts each residency to the students, the school environment, and the community the school serves. She meets students where they are -- socially, culturally, and developmentally -- and builds confidence through participation. Her sessions are lively and interactive: students learn through rhythm, call-and-response singing, movement, and group collaboration.

A key part of the program is hands-on interaction with instruments -- especially percussion such as djembes -- combined with singing and structured group activities. Students practice listening, taking turns, leading and following, and working as a team.
